Several thousand DMK partymen had thronged the hospital as Karunanidhi's health began to fade, the police moved in swiftly to put a security ring around the area.

Earlier the day as Karunanidhi's health deteriorated, Tamil Nadu DGP ordered all district police officers to be ready for work.

The DGP ordered all police officers to address the urgent law and order situation in the wake of Karunanidhi's condiction.

All police officers including ADSP, DSP and inspectors in various Tamil Nadu districts were asked to immediately report to work.
