Karnataka elections: Sonia hits campaign trail after 2 years. Says wherever Modi goes, he distorts facts

Former Congress president Sonia Gandhi hit the campaign trail Tuesday after two years, and immediately went on the attack against Prime Minister Narendra Modi. 

"Wherever Modiji goes, he says wrong things and distorts historical facts," Sonia said. "He (Modi) uses the names of heroes from our history for his political motives," she added.  

Sonia was speaking in Bijapur. Karnataka goes to the polls on May 12. 

Sonia added that Modi was proud of the fact that he is a very good orator.  

She added that she agreed with the fact. That "he speaks like an actor." But that "speeches cannot fill empty stomachs, food is needed for that." 

She added that Modi can stand no dissent. 

"Modi ji par Congress-mukt bharat ka junoon hai, unhe iska bhoot laga hai. Congress-mukt bharat toh chhodiye, woh apne saamne kisi ko bardaash nahi kar sakte." 

The Karnataka campaign, like Gujarat before it, has been getting uglier by the day. Modi has accused the state's Congress government of corruption, and of doing nothing for the "development" of the state. The Congress has turned around and asked what BS Yeddyurappa's BJP government did for the state.

Sonia continued that charge today. 

The Congress has worked for the development of Karnataka, she said, adding "you must know that the central government is working in a biased manner when it comes to Karnataka." 

"All states that suffered drought were given compensation (by centre). Karnataka was provided with the least. This was like rubbing salting into the wounds of farmers," she said. 

"I ask Modi ji, is this your 'sabka-saath, sabka-vikas'?" she added. 

She said that Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah had wanted to meet Prime Minister over the Karnataka drought issue but that he refused. 

"By doing this he has insulted not only the farmers but also the state of Karnataka," she added.
