Karnataka elections: EC arrests 2 in connection with recovery of fake voter ID cards

The Election Commission has arrested two people in connection with the recovery of fake voter ID cards from Karnataka's Bengaluru ahead of the assembly election to be held on May 12.

The chief election officer Sanjiv Kumar has also expressed the possibility of more arrests in the case.

Calling the issue as a very serious matter, he said that the matter was being further investigated.

He also assured that no one had interfered with their system and that no new voter ID cards were made from their end.

He said, " We are trying to reach the truth at the earliest. However, one thing is certain that nobody has broken into our system and no new voter ID cards have been made".

The EC had also called for a delegation meeting to discuss the recovery of over 9,000 voter ID cards. The meeting was attended by Union Ministers Smriti Irani, Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi, JP Nadda, Dharmendra Pradhan and SS Ahluwalia.

The Election Commission of Karnataka recovered 9,746 Electors Photo Identity Card (EPIC) from an apartment in Bengaluru`s Jalahalli area of Raja Rajeshwari Nagar constituency on late Tuesday night.
