A 20-year-old woman committed suicide by hanging herself in Chikmagalur on January 6, blaming moral policing by five men who harassed her and her mother for her relationship with a Muslim boy in her suicide note.

The accused belonged to a right-wing organisation, media reports said.

Of the five accused, one has been arrested, a top police official told ANI, adding that a case has been registered under abetment of suicide. The accused, Anil, is the president of the BJP District Yuva Morcha.

"On 6 January, a 20-year-old woman committed suicide. In her suicide note, she wrote that a group of five harassed her and her mother by alleging that she goes out with a Muslim boy. One person has been arrested," said Superintendent of Police, Chikmagalur.A case has been registered under 306 (Abetment to suicide) of the IPC.

The day she committed suicide, the accused had barged into her house and harassed her parents, telling them that her relationship was a case of "love jihad" or conversion of Hindu women by Muslim men by drawing them into a relationship.
