A top Lashkar-e Toiba (LeT) commander is killed in the encounter at Handwara in north Kashmir's Kupwara district, an official said.

Earlier, a colonel and a major were among the five security personnel who were killed in action. 

"Four Indian Army personnel including the commanding officer, major of 21 Rashtriya Rifles (RR) unit along with two soldiers & lone Jammu and Kashmir Police jawan lost their lives in an encounter in Handwara in Jammu and Kashmir," army officials said, reported news agency ANI.

Two terrorists were also killed in the encounter that started on Friday, the officials added. 

Describing the incident, the officials said that a team of RR had entered the house of a civilian to prevent a hostage situation after they were attacked by militants who were already present. They also said that the civilians present inside the house were safely evacuated.

On Friday, a local cop said that the security officials launched a cordon and search operation in Chanjmulla area of Handwara following inputs about the presence of militants there. 

In a separate operation in another Kashmir district Pulwama, security forces killed two militants on Friday.
