INX Media money-laundering case: How Abhishek Manu Singhvi defended Karti Chidambaram in court

CBI today presented former finance minister P Chidambaram's son Karti Chidambaram in front of the magistrate in Patiala House Court in Delhi.

Congress leader and senior lawyer Abhishek Manu Singhvi appeared for Karti Chidambaram.

Before the commencement of the proceedings, Abhishek Manu Singhvi spoke to Karti Chidambaram for ten minutes after taking permission from the magistrate.

The court proceedings started at 5:10 pm on Wednesday.

The CBI lawyer told the court that Karti Chidambaram is not cooperating. The agency requested 15 days remand in order to question Karti.

The court was informed that on February 17 an accused had stated before the magistrate that Karti Chidambaram had asked for a million dollars in a hotel.

Abhishek Manu Singhvi while defending his client, said that two summons were given for interrogating Karti and he appeared on both occasions.

Karti went twice last year when he was summoned for questioning which lasted for 22 hours, Singhvi informed the court.

Singhvi added further that since the last inquiry was made six months ago and till date, no summons were received, so CBI's contention that his client did not cooperate does not hold true.

Karti's lawyer said CBI's second argument for remand that he is constantly touring abroad does not hold ground. Did he run away, Singhvi asked the court.

Karti has travelled abroad so far with the permission of the court, he asserted, adding that he had told the court about his arrival date and left after the court's permission and returned back as well.
