An infiltration bid was thwarted by the forces in Jammu & Kashmir's Tangdhar sector early on Saturday. At least five terrorists were killed in the operation by the Indian Army along the Line of Control (LoC).

The fresh infiltration attempt comes a day after Indian Army chief Gen Bipin Rawat said Pakistan should "stop infiltration" if it aims to end turbulence at the border. The general also called for an end to unprovoked firing by the Pakistani forces.

"We want peace at borders but as you know Pakistan continuously violates ceasefire that causes loss of life and property and in such a case we have to retaliate but if Pakistan wants peace, we expect them to take initiative, which will start with them stopping infiltration," he said.

Earlier in the month, with the onset of Ramzan, the Centre announced the suspension of all operations targeting the militants in the Kashmir Valley.

The Union Home Ministry has said the decision has been taken to help the "peace-loving Muslims observe Ramzan in a peaceful environment".

However, it clarified that the security forces "reserve the right to retaliate if attacked or if essential to protect the lives of innocent people".
