Indian 'Mitron' app takes on Chinese TikTok, clocks five million downloads within one month of launch

Developed and quietly released by an IIT Roorkee student 'Mitron' app has seen tremendous success on mobile platforms and has become hugely popular amongst the young Indians, it is also now no 2 android app in India.

The short video platform made in India has a 4.7-star rating on Google Play store. This comes at a time when the popular video platform it is a copy of – TikTok has a rating of 1.4 stars, because of several factors including the fact that it is a Chinese app.

Mitron app has been developed by a student of IIT Roorkee which works the same as Chinese TikTok, which is popular among the younger lots for making and posting short videos.

With anti-Chinese sentiment running high even among the millennials, especially after the coronavirus pandemic, the desi Mitron is finding ready takers as it has an added appeal – the term 'Mitron', meaning friends, has often been used by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his speeches.

It is pegged as a rival to TikTok which is in the midst of an acrimonious controversy that saw its ratings come down alarmingly in the last week or so. There was even a #BanTikTok campaign on social media platforms after a video glorifying acid attack emerged on it. 

As many as 6 million people bombarded 1-star review with negative on the Google Play Store. So much so that the ratings of the app is down to 1.3 stars from 4.5 stars.
