India signs extradition treaty with Antigua to bring back Mehul Choksi

Indian and Antigua governments have signed an extradition deal which would pave the way for Indian agencies to bring back Mehul Choksi from Antigua, reports said.  

Choksi, who along with his nephew Nirav Modi, is accused of defrauding India's second largest public lender Punjab National Bank (PNB) of $1.8 billion. 

Choksi took Antiguan citizenship in January this year. 

According to reports, a team of the MEA and officials from other agencies had gone to the Caribbean nation to request the authorities to extradite Choksi.

It is also believed that Choksi has already moved the court in Antigua and filed a petition saying that he should not be extradited as he has followed the due process of law. 

India had earlier handed over a request to Antigua for the extradition of  Choksi. 

The Antiguan authorities had cleared his citizenship proposal in November last year after no adverse report was received from India.
