India replaces Vietnam to become second largest mobile phone producer after China

India's mobile phone users have been increasing by the day, various reports suggest the same and now, another study points at the fact that the Indian mobile manufacturing industry is leaving no stone unturned to meet the ever-expanding demand.

India stands second in the world in mobile phone production after China. 

According to a report by the Indian Cellular Association, India replaced Vietnam to become the second largest producer of mobile phones in 2017.

Data available from market research firm IHS, China's National Bureau of Statistics and Vietnam General Statistics Office was studied to conclude that the annual production of mobile phones in India increased from 3 million units in 2014 to 11 million units in 2017. 

With a boost in mobile production, smartphone imports dropped by less than half in 2017. 

"We are happy to inform you that with the strenuous and calibrated efforts of the government of India, ICA and FTTF, India has now emerged as the second largest producer of mobile handsets by volume," ICA National President Pankaj Mohindroo said in a letter addressed to union ministers on March 28 

India has now set a target to achieve around 500 million mobile phone production by 2019.
