India records highest single-day spike in coronavirus cases; death toll crosses 12,500

India reported the highest single-day spike of 13,586 new coronavirus cases in the last 24 hours.

The health ministry reported 336 deaths in one day with the total death toll climbing to 12,573.

The total number of cases due to virus stands currently stands at 3,80,532 including 1,63,248 active cases. The health ministry added that 2,04,711 patients were cured of the virus.

Meanwhile, the "intense" lockdown in Tamil Nadu's four districts including capital Chennai began on Friday. The lockdown is set to continue till June 30 in four districts. Chengalpet, Kancheepuram and Thiruvallur have also been put under lockdown.

The total number of cases in Delhi has gone up to 49,979 including 21,341 patients. ANI quoting government sources said that 20,000 samples were tested in the capital amid the rising cases.

In Telangana 352 new coronavirus cases were reported along with three deaths with the total number of cases climbing to 6,027 including 2,531 active cases. The death toll due to the virus has risen to 195 in the state.
