India Meteorological Department predicts intense rainfall for next 24 hours in Mumbai, warnings issued

The India Meteorological Department on Saturday said that Satellite and radar indicate very heavy rainfall in Mumbai for the weekend.

"Strong winds with speed reaching 40-50 kmph gusting to 60 kmph likely to prevail along and off Maharashtra coast during next three days and along south Maharashtra -Goa coast during next four days," the IMD said.

"Rough to very rough sea conditions (wind speed reaching 40-50 kmph) are likely to prevail over the north Arabian sea, central and south-west Arabian Sea during next 5 days," IMD further added.

The red alert has been issued in many parts of Maharashtra.

Deputy Director General of India Met Department, KS Hosalikar tweeted, ''Rainfall Updates. With the development of low pressure area over Bay, this Saturday night and Sunday, Mumbai is very likely to get intense heavy rainfalls. Warnings are issued including West coast. TC and watch for updates please.''

Heavy rains lashed Mumbai in the last 24 hours, especially in the suburbs flooding several areas.

Mumbai-Goa national highway in Maharashtra was closed for traffic following a landslide caused by rainfall near Mauje Dhamandevi village in Raigarh.

The landslide occurred in the early hours of Saturday.
