India-Germany relations based on democracy and rule of law: PM Modi

German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Prime Minister Narendra Modi issued a joint statement after the bilateral meeting.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday said that India and Germany relations are based on democracy and rule of law; that is why the two countries share the same views on major issues of the world.

Modi also said that the two countries will work towards strengthening bilateral and multilateral cooperation to fight terrorism.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Prime Minister Narendra Modi held talks in New Delhi and issued a joint statement at the end of the bilateral meeting.

Modi also thanked Merkel for supporting India's membership in export control regimes. 

''We're grateful to Germany for supporting India's membership in export control regimes. Both countries will continue efforts and cooperation to reform the United Nations, UN Security Council and international order,'' he added.

Modi also stressed the importance of enhancing cooperation in the areas of new and advanced technology, artificial intelligence, skills, education, cybersecurity between the two countries. 

Meanwhile, German Chancellor Angela Merkel said that she intended to work very closely on sustainable development and climate protection with India.

''20,000 Indian nationals are studying in Germany. We would like to see even more. When it comes to vocational training, we want to have an exchange of teachers too,'' she added.

India and Germany signed 11 MoUs and exchanged five documents after the bilateral. 

This is the fifth Modi-Merkel meeting this year.
