Story highlights

The launch came on the occasion of World Hindi Day and is first of its kind for a non-UN Asian language.

In a move that is likely to give a boost to Hindi language's prospects of becoming an official UN language, the United Nations launched its first news service website in Hindi last week.

The launch came on the occasion of World Hindi Day and is first of its kind for a non-UN Asian language.

India would need 2/3rd of United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) to vote in favour of Hindi to become one of UN's official languages.

Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish are currently the six official languages at the United Nations.

A weekly news bulletin was launched by the UN in Hindi last year. The organisation, at present, uses Hindi on its social media platforms as well.
