A student of IIT-Roorkee, Abhijeet Singh Vansia, was found hanging from the ceiling fan of his room on Wednesday. Initial inquiries into the 21-year-old's death indicate that he may have killed himself as part of an online suicide game, media reports quoted police as saying.

A native of Surat district in Gujarat, Abhijeet was a third-year student of IIT-Roorkee’s BTech (biotechnology) programme.

No suicide note has been recovered.

Dean (students’ welfare) Professor Anand Joshi told a media outlet that Abhijeet's death has come as a shock to everyone since he seemed happy and showed no symptoms of depression.

Media reports also quoted police as saying that many other IIT students may be addicted to virtual games such as the Blue Whale Challenge which has claimed so many lives in India and around the world.

A media outlet quoted an inspector, Sadhna Tyagi, as saying that one of the students at the campus had revealed that many students in Abhijeet's hostel were addicted to playing suicide games online. He said they were playing a game called "30 ways of suicide" these days.
