"I bow to the people of Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh for their affection and trust in BJP," Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted Monday.

The BJP is on course to win in both Gujarat and Himachal

"I assure them that we will leave no stone unturned in furthering the development journey of these states and serve the people tirelessly," Modi added.

Modi said the election results indicate "strong support" for the "politics of good governance and development".

And he added that he saluted the "hard-working BJP karyakartas (party workers) in these two states for their hard work which has led to these impressive victories".

It has been a long and bitter campaign in Gujarat, with Modi towards the fag end of his campaign even claiming that Pakistan was meddling in the Gujarat elections.

He also told the electorate that Pakistan was trying to hoist a Muslim chief minister on them.

And despite what Modi might now say about the election results indicating support for "good governance and development", the earlier allegations were meant not to draw attention to them but to other fears in the Gujarat electorate.

Commentators have said Modi's last-minute intervention might have swung the election the BJP's way -- the party has been in power in Gujarat for 22 years, this will be its seventh stint in power -- but he has done so at a cost to his image.
