High Court orders immediate release of Tandoor murder case convict Sushil Kumar Sharma

The Delhi High Court on Friday ordered the immediate release of Sushil Kumar Sharma who was convicted in the 1995 Tandoor Murder case.

The former youth Congress leader killed his wife in 1995 after accusing her of indulging in an affair. He then allegedly cut her body into pieces and tried to burn it in a tandoor.

Sharma was sentenced to death by a lower court in 2003. His death sentence was upheld by the Delhi High Court in 2007. 

In 2013 the sentence was relegated due to lack of evidence. The apex court had said that there was no evidence to prove that Sushil had chopped his wife's body into pieces and burnt it in a tandoor.

A Bench of Justices Siddharth Mridul and Sangita Dhingra Sehgal allowed the plea filed by Sharma seeking his release.

Sharma who sought release from the jail cited his conduct and added that his death sentence was commuted by the Supreme Court because of lack of evidence.

His lawyer Amit Sahni had asked the court for the release and said Sharma was in the prison since 1995 and has already served the maximum prescribed sentence.
