Hapur lynching: SC tells police to protect witnesses, submit report
Follow UsThe Supreme Court has told the Meerut Inspector General of Police to submit a report on the Hapur lynching and to ensure the protection of witnesses in the case. It said Monday that it would next hear the matter on August 28.
The June 18 lynching had been caught on cellphone and had been widely circulated on social media.
The videos had shown a mob thrashing 45-year-old meat trader Qasim Qureshi. Another man, Samiuddin, 60, had also been beaten, his beard pulled, and abuse hurled at him. The mob had accused both men of cow slaughter.
Qasim had died soon after.

Samiuddin has since said he is a farmer, and has denied the allegations of cow slaughter. He has added that Qasim was a meat trader, but that he dealt in goats and buffaloes. Not cows.
Police made four arrests in the case, including the main accused Rakesh Sisodia.
Sisodia was let out on bail soon after but a TV news sting has since caught him on camera owning up to the crime.
