Gurmeet Ram Rahim sentenced to life imprisonment for murder of journalist

The CBI Special Court in Panchkula on Thursday awarded life imprisonment to Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh in Sirsa-based journalist Ramchandra Chhatrapati's murder in 2002.

Three other convicts -- Kuldeep Singh, Nirmal Singh and Krishan Lal -- have also been awarded life imprisonment. The court has also imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 on each one of the accused.

The CBI court on January 11 convicted Dera Sacha Sauda chief for the murder of the journalist.

Three others, who reportedly were close aides of Gurmeet were also convicted in the case.

The 51-year-old Godman is currently serving a 20-year prison term in Rohtak's Sunaria jail for raping two of his women followers.

Journalist Ram Chander Chhatrapati was shot at after his newspaper, 'Poora Sach', published an anonymous letter narrating how women were being sexually exploited by Gurmeet Ram Rahim at the Dera headquarters in Sirsa.

The journalist later succumbed to injuries and a case was registered in 2003. The case was handed over to the CBI in 2006.
