'We don't want to create a situation like 1987 where all political parties in the valley come together and the only space that remains is for fringe. As I said to Mehbooba Mufti Ji on Twitter yesterday, we have to fight another day, good luck to her, good luck to us,' Omar said.

Former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Omar Abdullah said Thursday that he does not belive the NC, PDP and Congress fighting the elections together would benefit the state because "legitimate opposition voices are essential".

He added that the arrangement — the three parties had announced yesterday that they were coming together in a grand alliance — was to "protect Jammu and Kashmir from (the) current mess".

PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti wrote to Govenor Satya Pal Malik after news of the three parties coming together broke, staking her claim to form a government in the state.

The three parties between them had the numbers needed to form a government. (There was also a rival claim from Sajjad Lone of the People's Conference. Lone said he had the backing of the BJP.)

Jammu and Kashmir Governor Satya Pal Malik however dissolved the assembly saying the three parties had differing ideologies and would not be able to provide a stable government.

The dissolution of the assembly means the state will have to hold elections within six months.

On Thursday, Omar said he did not have a legal case to make against the governor since he had not provided documentary support to Mufti's PDP but had only talked to them.

He added that it was up to Mufti to decide whether she wanted to challenge the governor's decision in the courts.
