Lalu Prasad Yadav and Jagannath Mishra were in January sentenced to five years in prison in the third fodder scam case also referred to as the Chaibasa treasury case. The case pertained to the embezzlement of Rs 33.67 crore from Chaibasa district treasury during 1992-93.

Jagannath Mishra was in December acquitted in the fodder scam case which relates to the alleged fraudulent withdrawal of more than Rs 89 lakh from the Deoghar treasury between 1991 and 1994 when Lalu was chief minister of Bihar.

Lalu, who is accused in a total of six fodder scam cases, has been found guilty in three cases so far.

An earlier conviction in 2013 for five years had made him ineligible to stand for elections for six years.

The fodder scam was first unearthed in the 1990's by the office of the Comptroller and Auditor General when it noticed that invoices from the Bihar treasury would always come in late.

The invoices, for payments that were never being made, were fake.
