In a public meeting at Ahmedpur in Birbhum district, the West Bengal chief minister reportedly described the current updation of the NRC as an attempt to drive out Bengalis from Assam.

She allegedly asked the BJP government of the state to not to play with fire. Banerjee also warned the government that she would not remain silent if Bengalis were uprooted from the state.

The BJP led government in Assam said that her statement amounted to contempt of Supreme Court.

The National Register of Citizens (NRC) published its first draft on Sunday.

The draft declared almost 1.9 crore Assam residents as "legal" while declaring the rest to await further stages of verification.

The total population of the state is around 3.29 crore.
