'Padmaavat' row: Supreme Court to hear contempt petition against 4 states for no-show
Follow UsCongress supporter Tehseen Poonawalla moved Supreme Court today, January 25, on the date of official release of the film "Padmaavat" seeking contempt action against four states for failing to contain mobs protesting against the epic film.
The pleas are not only directed against movie hall owners but also Karni Sena for stopping the screening of a film that has been passed by the CBFC and given a nod for release by the apex court on an earlier occasion.
This comes after the Multiplex Association of India said it has decided not to screen the film in four states. "We have decided not to play the film in four states — Rajasthan, Gujarat, MP and Goa — as the local management has told us that the law and order situation is not conducive," said Deepak Asher, president of the association.
SC has agreed to hear on Monday the contempt pleas filed.
The pleas state that the four states -- Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Gujarat and Goa -- did not abide by the apex court judgement and defied its order.
It is to note that these states had earlier moved SC asking for a blanket ban on the film as it would create a law and order scene in the disturbed states as Karni Sena protestors feel 'hurt' by the portrayal of their queen 'Padmavati' in the film.
The court had then ruled in favour of the film and ordered for a country-wide release of the film asking the state governments to provide security to its people and ensure the release of the film.
