Cyclone Nisarga disrupts power lines in Maharashtra; weakens after making landfall in Alibaug

India's Meteorological Department said that cyclonic storm Nisarga has weakened over coastal Maharashtra.

The weather department informed that light to moderate rainfall is likely in Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh in the next 24 hours with heavy rain in several parts of Raigad, Dhule, Nandurbar and Nashik districts.

The cyclone had earlier made landfall in Alibaug in Maharashtra's coast as it disrupted power supply lines in Maharashtra's Raigad, Palghar, Thane and Pune with several areas heavily waterlogged.

The cyclone hit Maharashtra's district with a wind speed of upto 120 kmph. However, according to the Meteorological Department, it weakened into a cyclonic storm in the evening.

According to Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company (MSEDC), over 25 lakh consumers in Raigad, Palghar, Thane, and Pune experienced electricity interruptions due to cyclone Nisarga.

"The system weakened into a cyclonic storm and lay centered at 16.30 hrs near lat 19.0 deg N and Long 73.7 deg E (Pune District) over interior Maharashtra about 100 km east north east of Alibaug, 90 km east of Mumbai (Colaba) and 50 km north northwest of Pune," the IMD said in the statement.

The cyclone brought heavy rain in Colaba and Santacruz in Mumbai with upto 46 mm to 22 mm with wind speeds of 50 kmph and 58 kmp.

Flight operations at the Mumbai airport were suspended in the afternoon as the cyclone approached but resumed later.
