Curfew relaxed for seven hours in Assam's Guwahati

The administration in Assam's Guwahati relaxed the curfew imposed in the wake of huge protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill 2019 for seven hours on Saturday. 

Assam is the epicentre of the uproar in the Northeast and the curfew in Guwahati will be lifted from 9 am to 4 pm. Earlier, on Thursday, demonstrations were peaceful in Assam after two days of intensified violence where two people were also killed. 

Although, suspension of mobile Internet services was extended for another 48 hours in 10 districts of Assam.

On Thursday, the demonstrations against the Bill reached other parts of India, including New Delhi, West Bengal and southern India.

In Delhi, at least 50 students of Jamia Millia Islamia (JMU) were detained by police following incidents of violence between police and protesters. 

The people of northeast are angry over BIll's provision to give citizenship to migrants coming from other countries. 

The President Ram Nath Kovind gave his approval to the Bill on Thursday, signing it into law. 

The United States and the United Kingdom have earlier issued travel advisories for tourists from their respective countries to "exercise caution" if they intend to travel to violence-hit northeast India. 

On Friday, Japanese PM Shinzo Abe also postponed his visit to India that was scheduled on December 15. It was expected that Abe's trip was planned in the northeast region. 

The citizenship bill provides citizenship to migrants coming to India of Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist, Jain, Parsi and Christian communities till December 31, 2014, from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan due to religious persecution.
