Coronavirus count in Mumbai's Dharavi crosses 1,000, death toll stands at 40

The number of coronavirus cases in Mumbai's Dharavi, considered to be the biggest slum of Asia, rose to 1,028 on Wednesday.

The death toll due to the pandemic in the area rose to 40 on Tuesday from 31.

Dharavi recorded its first coronavirus patient on April 1, 20 days after the first case of coronavirus infection was reported in Mumbai.

Meanwhile, Maharashtra on Wednesday reported 54 deaths, while the number of positive cases across the state achieved a new single-day spike of 1,495.

The state's death toll shot up to 975 and the total number of coronavirus patients increased to 25,922.

Of the total deaths, a staggering 40 were recorded in Mumbai alone, taking the city's toll to 596 and the number of patients in the city shot up by a new high of 800 to touch 15,747.

Besides Mumbai, there were six deaths in Pune, two each in Jalgaon, Solapur, and Aurangabad, plus one each in Palghar and Ratnagiri.
