BJP on Sunday accused the Congress of sabotaging the Triple Talaq Bill and said that the Grand Old Party did not want BJP to get credit for passing the historic bill.

''Congress sabotaged the bill because they didn't want BJP to get credit for it. They don't want Muslim women to get justice,'' news agency ANI said quoting Jitendra Singh, Minister of State for Development of North Eastern Region.

The irony is that the communist friends who always talk about social justice are not in favour of justice to women, Singh added as per the report.

The bill, already cleared by the Lok Sabha, could not be passed in the upper house due to a deadlock over Opposition's demand to send it to the Select Committee for close scrutiny.

The legislation proposes to criminalise instant triple talaq and suggests up to three years in jail as punishment for a Muslim husband who divorces his wife by uttering "talaq" thrice.

Meanwhile, a woman was given Triple Talaq in Gonda over phone after she asked money for the treatment of their differently-abled daughter.
