Days after an Independent candidate raised objections over Congress president Rahul Gandhi's nomination citing "alleging discrepancies over citizenship and educational qualifications in his election affidavit", the Amethi returning officer on Monday declared that the Congress president's nomination was valid.

Defending Gandhi his lawyer KC Kaushik said that Rahul was born in India and he holds an Indian passport.

"Rahul Gandhi was born in India and he holds an Indian passport, he never took citizenship of any other country. His passport, Voter-ID, and his income tax, everything is of India".

Speaking on the objections raised on Rahul Gandhi's educational qualification Kaushik said he does not know who Raul Vinci was and where he came from.

"I don't know who Raul Vinci is or where he came from. Rahul Gandhi had done his M.Phil in 1995 from University of Cambridge, I have attached a copy of the certificate, ".

An independent candidate on Saturday raised objections over Congress president Rahul Gandhi’s nomination from Amethi, alleging discrepancies over citizenship and educational qualifications in his election affidavit.

Complainant Dhruv Raj’s lawyer Ravi Prakash showed reporters purported copies of a certificate of incorporation of a UK-registered company in which the Congress leader is stated to be a British national.

Citing the complaint, Bharatiya Janata Party spokesperson G.V.L Narasimha Rao demanded that Mr. Gandhi come clean on the matter.
