Story highlights

BS Yediyurappa has requested Maharashtra government to help the state fight acute water shortage.

While the nation fights the coronavirus, Karnataka is also fighting a battle against an incoming drought.

Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa expressed his concern over the acute water shortage in few districts of North Karnataka.

He wrote a letter to the Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray requesting him to release six TMC water from the Maharashtra reservoirs to the the rivers passing through and in Karnataka.

The water shortage has been acute since early March in mainly few districts, namely Belagavi, Vijayapura, Bagalkot, Kalaburagi, Yadagiri and Raichur.

"I request you to kindly direct the concerned authorities to release 3 TMC of water from Warna/Koyna reservoirs to Krishna river and 3 TMC of water from Ujjaini reservoir to Bhima river on humanitarian grounds for drinking purpose," Yediyurappa said in his letter.

This is not the first time Karnataka has asked Maharashtra government to help the state in times of drought. In recent past, too, Maharashtra has helped Karnataka by releasing water from its reservoirs for Karnataka, to accomodate the needs of humans as well as livestock of Karnataka.
