A police source has said that the main accused in the Bihar shelter home case, Brajesh Thakur, spoke often to the husband of Social Welfare Department Minister Manju Verma.

News reports Wednesday quoted the unnamed source as saying Chadeshwar Verma's name had popped up on Thakur's call record, as had the names of a number of other high-profile men.

Medical reports have confirmed that at least 34 girls were raped, and many of them tortured, at the state-run shelter home in Muzaffarpur. There were 44 girls living at the shelter.

The news reports quoted the source as saying Chadeshwar and Thakur "exchanged over a dozen phone calls in the last one year or so."

Chadeshwar's name had cropped up during the investigation into the scandal after the wife of one of the arrested accused, Ravi Roshan, former Muzaffarpur child protection officer, alleged the minister's husband had frequented the shelter home.

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has said anybody with links to the shelter home case — including his Cabinet colleagues — will have to go.

The minister, Manju Verma, has denied any involvment in the case, saying her husband is being made a scapegoat in the case.
