Protesters in Mumbai disrupted traffic on Tuesday over the death of one person in Pune yesterday during an event to mark the 200th anniversary of the Bhima Koregaon battle.

Bharipa Bahujan Mahasangh (BBM) leader Prakash Ambedkar has called for a strike in Maharashtra on Wednesday even as Mumbai's central railway suspended suburban services between Kurla and Vashi on its harbour corridor.

The protesters forced shops to close in Mumbai area and disrupted eastern suburbs of Chembur, Vikhroli, Mankhurd and Govandi.

Hundreds of protesters gathered in Priyadarshini, Kurla, Sidharth Colony and Amar Mahal areas on the Eastern Express Highway, took out processions and raised slogans against the government.

Congress president Rahul Gandhi blamed the BJP for the crisis, tweeting: "Una, Rohith Vemula and now Bhima-Koregaon are potent symbols of the resistance."
