The death toll following the collapse of the three-storey building early on Monday in the western Indian state of Maharashtra jumped to 11. 

Police said seven children and four others were killed in the accident in Bhiwandi town, reports news agency PTI.

They also added that a four-year-old boy was among the 13 people who were rescued from the rubble. 

Initially, 20-25 people were feared trapped, but National Disaster Relief Response (NDRF) said as many as 20 people have been rescued and its teams are present to rescue the remaining people, 

Several people who were trapped were rescued by the locals. 

A civic official said the building had 40 flats and about 150 people live in it. It fell around 3:40 am IST when residents were sleeping. 

Earlier Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi also expressed his condolences to the families affected by the tragedy. 

"Saddened by the building collapse in Bhiwandi, Maharashtra. Condolences to the bereaved families. Praying for a quick recovery of those injured. Rescue operations are underway and all possible assistance is being provided to the affected," Modi wrote in a tweet.

Thane guardian minister Eknath Shinde visited the site of the accident and declared a compensation of Rs 5 lakh (USD 6,800) to the kin of each victim.
