The self-styled godman Asaram appeared broken after his conviction yesterday, news reports said Thursday.

The reports added that he kept telling his lawyers to "do something".

Asaram was on Wednesday found guilty of raping a teenage girl at his ashram near Jodhpur in 2013. The sentence was passed inside Jodhpur Central Jail — where Asaram has been lodged since 2013 — itself.

Asaram was later sentenced to life in prison.

The girl and her family were the self-styled godman's followers.

The comment about Asaram appearing broken was made by Jodhpur Jail Superintendent Vikram Singh.

"Do something", the 77-year-old kept on muttering to his advocates during the hearing of arguments on the quantum of sentence, PTI reported Singh as saying.

"Asaram seemed nervous on hearing the verdict," PTI reported a police officer present on the premises of the jail as saying.

"Asaram appeared broken. He said he will now move a higher court," Singh said.

Inside his cell, Asaram was restless and kept on lumbering for some time, Singh added.

Two co-accused were also convicted by the court, while two others were acqutted. There were a total of five people, including Asaram, accused of the crime.
