Apology from Mamata Banerjee among 6 demands put forth by agitating West Bengal doctors 

Protesting doctors in West Bengal on Friday set six conditions to call an end to the impasse. One of the primary demands, besides security to doctors and the implementation of Protection Act, is an unconditional apology from West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, news agency PTI reported. 

"We want unconditional apology of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for the manner in which she had addressed us at the SSKM Hospital yesterday. She should not have said what she had," a spokesperson of the joint forum of junior doctors, Dr Arindam Dutta, said.

Listing the six conditions, the agitators said the chief minister will have to visit the injured doctors at the hospital and her office should release a statement condemning the attack on them, news agency PTI reported.

"We also want the immediate intervention of the chief minister. Documentary evidence of judicial enquiry against the inactivity of the police to provide protection to the doctors at the Nil Ratan Sircar Medical College and Hospital on Monday night should also be provided," he said.

"We demand documentary evidence and details of action taken against those who had attacked us," Dutta said.

They also demanded unconditional withdrawal of all "false cases and charges" which were imposed on junior doctors and medical students across West Bengal in the wake of their strike.

They also stressed on their demand for improvement of infrastructure in all health facilities as well as posting of armed police personnel there.

This comes when the state-wide unrest spilt over to other states, taking shape of a nationwide protest by the medical fraternity. 

The Indian Medical Association (IMA) has declared an All India Protest Day Friday in the wake of violence against doctors in Kolkata.

"The past few days have seen violence on doctors and hospitals in many states. The gruesome incident in NRS Medical College, Kolkata is of barbaric nature. Dr Paribaha Mukharjee, who was brutally attacked, is critical and fighting for his life. IMA condemns the violence perpetrated on a young doctor. Entire medical fraternity expresses our solidarity with the Residents who are on strike", the IMA said in a press release.

The IMA has released a set of 10 directives to coordinate action in all the local branches under their jurisdiction in connection with the planned protest. Among them are members directed to wear the black badges and give a memorandum to district authorities across the country.

Meanwhile, Delhi Medical Association, today, also called for a 'total medical bandh to protest. 

Calcutta High Court has given 7 days to West Bengal government to respond while hearing a PIL on doctors' strike in the state. 

The Court asked the state about steps taken by the government to end the impasse, adding that the state administration will have to put an end to the unrest and find a solution.

Mass resignations began on Thursday evening as 18 doctors from Sagar Dutta Medical College and Hospital sent their resignation to the state health department. The hospital where the doctor was assaulted saw the resignation of principal, superintendent and five other doctors from the forensic medicine department. 

On Friday, as many as 119 doctors of North Bengal Medical College & Hospital in Darjeeling resigned over violence against doctors in the state. News agency PTI reported over 100 doctors of various state-run hospitals in West Bengal have resigned.
