Home Minister Rajnath Singh on Sunday expressed shock and anguish over the death of innocent people in a grenade attack in Amritsar, Punjab on Sunday. 

''Deeply anguished by the death of innocent people in a grenade attack in Amritsar. My condolences to the families who have lost their loved ones in this attack,'' the home minister was quoted as saying by news agency ANI.

Rajnath also wished a speedy recovery of those injured in the ''reprehensible act of violence''. 

The Home Minister said that he spoke to Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh.

''Spoke to the Punjab CM Captain Amarinder Singh who has apprised me of the situation in the wake of the grenade attack. Strongest possible action will be taken against the perpetrators of this crime,'' he said. 

Three persons lost their lives while at least 10 sustained injuries in a grenade attack on a prayer hall brimming with around 200 devotees on the outskirts of the city on Sunday.

The attack took place during a religious gathering of the Nirankari sect at Nirankari Bhavan in Adliwal village near Amritsar's Rajasansi, which is close to the international airport.
