Aarushi Talwar murder case: CBI challenges parents' acquittal in Supreme Court

The Central Bureau of Investigation has challenged the acquittal of Dr Rajesh and Nupur Talwar in the murder of their daughter Aarushi Talwar.

On October 12, 2017, the Allahabad High Court had set aside a CBI court's conviction and acquitted the couple of the murder of their daughter. 

The court had said it was giving the "benefit of doubt" to the couple.

In December 2017, Hemraj's wife had also moved the Supreme Court challenging the acquittal

The Talwars had filed an appeal with the Allahabad High Court challenging the CBI court order which had convicted them of the murder of their daughter Aarushi and their domestic help Hemraj.

Fourteen-year-old Aarushi was found dead inside her room at the Talwars' Noida, Uttar Pradesh home with her throat slit on the intervening night of May 15-16, 2008. 

Hemraj was initially suspected of the murder after he was thought to be missing but his body was found on the terrace of the Talwar home a day later.

Aarushi's father Rajesh Talwar was arrested seven days after his daughter's murder by the Uttar Pradesh police on May 23, 2008. 

The case was later taken over by the CBI. 

In 2009, the CBI had handed over the investigation to a new team, which in 2010 recommended closing the case due to critical gaps in the investigation.

It named Rajesh Talwar as the sole suspect based on circumstantial evidence but refused to charge him because of a lack of evidence.The court however refused to allow the CBI to close the case.
