Five people were lynched in Maharashtra's Dhule district Sunday because villagers thought they were child lifters.

PTI reported police as saying that the five people, along with a few others, were seen getting down from a state transport bus in the tribal-dominated Rainpada village.

Police said that when one of them tried to speak to a girl child, villagers, who had gathered for the weekly Sunday bazaar, pounced on them.

Police added there had been rumours of child lifters being active in the area.

Similar lynchings have been reported recently from elsewhere in the country too.

Two men were lynched in Assam's Karbi Along district in June. Both men were Assamese.

Seven people were lynched in Jharkhand in May.

And a 40-year-old woman beggar was lynched in Gujarat's Ahmedabad only this week.
