11 years since horrific Mumbai attacks, fisherman's widow still struggles for compensation

Eleven years have passed since the financial capital Mumbai came to a still due to horrific terror attacks that killed more than 160 people. However, Jasiben Bambhania, whose husband was killed by terrorists, is still waiting for her due even after a decade. 

The Lashkar-e-Toiba terrorists who took a sea route to enter India hijacked a boat of Indian fishermen and killed its crew members. Ramesh Nagji, the husband of Jasiben, was one of the fishermen, who lost his life in the incident. 

Bhambania said that her family is dealing with the financial crisis and still she is not given appropriate compensation by the Centre or state government. She said that after the tragedy, then Gujarat chief minister and incumbent PM Narendra Modi offered him assistance of Rs 50,000, but since, then their family has been completely 'neglected'. 

Bhambania added that after her husband's death, the family came under a lot of financial stress which forced her son to quit his studies and do menial jobs to support the family.

In October, Bhambania appealed to the Gujarat High Court, following which the government was asked to pay her a compensation of Rs 5 lakh. However, she did not receive the compensation as the government has still not issued a death certificate to her. 

As per rules, if a person remains missing for seven years, the government issues a death certificate. 

Out of the five fishermen families, three families are yet to receive compensation.
