A 105-year-old grandmother has proved that age is not a barrier to get education as she became the "oldest learner" of Kerala government's literacy mission by appearing for the fourth standard exam.
Bageerathi Amma, a mother of six and grandmother of 16 children from Parakulam village of Kollam district in Kerala, had to stop her education when she nine as she was required to take care of her younger siblings. Kerala State Literacy Mission took the initiative and is helping Bageerathi to realise her dreams. Bageerathi's exams began on Sunday and were completed yesterday.
"She is a real motivation for others who want to learn," said CK Pradeep Kumar district co-ordinator of State Literary Mission.
Kerala has a literacy rate of 94 per cent, highest amongst the Indian states.
The state's literacy mission aims to develop literacy skills of each and everyone interested in learning. The literacy mission aims to ensure secondary-level education to everyone in the state especially the illiterates, neo-literates, school drop-outs and those interested in life long education.
