Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Friday congratulated PM Narendra Modi on his landslide election victory.

In a statement, Hasina said that the resounding victory of BJP-led NDA in the polls is a reflection of the trust and confidence reposed on PM Modi by the people of the world's largest democracy.

Bangladesh attaches highest importance to its multi-faceted relations with India which is driven by genuine goodwill, mutual trust and respect, the statement said and called India's critical role in support of Bangladesh's war of Independence in 1971 as ''watershed moment'' in the relations between the two countries.

''I strongly believe that with the renewed mandate given to both of us by our respective peoples, Bangladesh-India ties, which have already been termed as a role model of good neighbourliness will be consolidated and our relations will scale newer heights,'' the statement added.

Hasina also extended an invitation to Modi to visit her country.
