Story highlights

While the Indian saree and lehenga have made its international red carpet debut long back, perhaps it's for the first time that the popular Mundu or Veshti has made it to an international film festival. The two actors were lauded on social media for choosing a traditional outfit for a formal event.

Malayalam filmmaker Sanal Kumar Sasidharan is presently at Venice with actors Akhil Viswanath, Nimisha Sajayan, and Joju George for their film 'Chola' which is the only Indian film to have made to the competition section this year.

The crew premiered the film at the film festival on Monday but what caught everyone's attention was the attire the men chose for the red carpet event. The cast and the director walked the red carpet at the premiere of 'The King'.

Usually, a formal-black tie event, actors Akhil Viswanath and Joju George decided to give the event a desi twist. Both actors walked the red carpet in traditional Mundu-a first perhaps on any international red carpet.

A traditional men's garment, Mundu or the Veshti(as it's called in Tamil Nadu) is traditionally white in colour and worn by men in southern India with a shirt. While George wore his white Mundu with a blue shirt and posed on the red carpet, Viswanath gave the traditional attire a modern spin and wore a black Mundu with a black shirt.

Their co-star Nimisha wore a traditional gold saree for the red carpet while Sasidharan wore western-formal.

The two actors later took to Instagram to share videos of their red carpet appearance.
