Rural India-set drama ‘Period. End of Sentence’ in Oscar race

While Rima Das’s ‘Village Rockstars’ might have slipped out of the race for Oscars in foreign film category there’s hope for another movie with an Indian connection to make it. The Assamese film’s Oscar run was cut short when the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences announced on Monday, the list of films shortlisted in 9 categories.
The other film that might do India proud, purely because of where the story is based out -- a village near national capital Delhi; is Iranian-American filmmaker Rayka Zehtabchi’s ‘Period. End of Sentence’. It has been shortlisted for the Documentary Short Subject category.
The film follows the efforts of a group of women to push for menstrual hygiene in a village near Delhi. The film’s producer is Guneet Monga (of the fame ‘The Lunchbox’).
The documentary chronicles the women’s experiences after low-cost pad manufacturing machine, invented by Arunachalam Muruganantham (the inspiration for the Akshay Kumar-starrer ‘PadMan’), is installed in the village.
India has never won an Academy Award in the Best Foreign Language Film category.
