Movie featuring raising of first five-star flag in Macao premiered

A patriotic movie featuring the first raising of the national flag of the People's Republic of China in Macao, premiered at the Hou Kong Middle School on Friday to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Macao's return to the motherland.

Based on the life experience of Madame Du Lan, former principal of the Hou Kong Middle School, and the school's history, the film, Macao's First October, recounts the story of Du leading the school to overcome obstacles and raise the first national flag in Macao when the People's Republic of China (PRC) was founded on October 1, 1949.

Through the story, the film presents the vicissitudes of Macao, and patriotism of the school faculty and students in greeting the national liberation. It also portrays how the old generation of revolutionaries and other figures are dedicated to the founding of the PRC and the development of Macao.

Xin Yiru, the film's director, said patriotism of Du Lan inspired them to make the movie.

"A person's destiny is closely linked with the nation's destiny. Madame Du Lan showed this to us with her experience and actions. She resolutely raised the first five-star red flag in Macao at that time. When shooting (the movie), we were all inspired and touched by this spirit of hers, and I hope everyone could embrace such feelings of patriotism," she said.

Lao Tun Leong, the current principal of the Hou Kong school, said they will carry on the old principal's patriotism and cultivate students with it.

"We should honestly carry on our old principal Du Lan's patriotism, and run our Hou Kong Middle School even better, so that the students we bring up are all patriotic and love our motherland and our five-star red flag when they go to society," said Lao.

The film is to be screened in cinemas and on TV nationwide soon.
