Lisa Kudrow responds to criticism of 'Friends': Show was relevant for the time it was aired

'Friends' star Lisa Kudrow known for playing Phoebe Buffay stands behind the beloved '90s sitcom. In a recent interview, Lisa opened about the recent criticism of 'Friends'.

The famous show has been running over the decade, on different platforms like TV, social media and OTT. Recently the show faced with some criticism with some saying that it has a problematic storyline -- describing it as transphobic, homophobic, sexist, and lacking diversity.

Responding to this, Lisa said if it were to be remade today, it would be different and said, "Oh, it'd be completely different. Well, it would not be an all-white cast, for sure."

The 56-year-old actress continued, "I'm not sure what else, but, to me, it should be looked at as a time capsule, not for what they did wrong."

The actress believes that the show which ran from 1994 until 2004 did have storylines that were meaningful and culturally relevant for the time when it was aired.

"This show thought it was very progressive," Kudrow said. "There was a guy whose wife discovered she was gay and pregnant, and they raised the child together? We had surrogacy too. It was, at the time, progressive."

As one of the most anticipated 'Friends' reunion special that was set to be a part of HBO Max launch which has been now delayed due to coronavirus outbreak, the reunion will see Kudrow, along with the other five stars Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Matthew Perry, Matt LeBlanc and David Schwimmer.

Kudrow will next be seen in Netflix's satirical series 'Space Force', alongside Steve Carell.
