Hollywood star Leonardo DiCaprio has now extended his support to groups who are working to raise awareness about pollution in Delhi.

Known to have an active voice about environmental issues, Hollywood star Leonardo DiCaprio has now extended his support to groups who are working to raise awareness about pollution in Delhi. Leo took to Instagram to share images of a protest that recently took place in India Gate, Delhi to demand govt's action on the growing pollution in the city.

The Oscar-winning actor gave a push to the efforts of the groups with an Instagram post, “ Over 1500 citizens gathered in at India Gate, in New Dehli, to demand immediate action on the cities hazardous pollution levels. According to the World Health Organisation, air pollution in India is estimated to kill about 1.5 million people every year; these statistics make air pollution the fifth-largest killer in India.”

"People of all ages joined the demonstration, which succeeded to directly trigger action for Indian citizens," DiCaprio wrote, adding, "The Indian Prime Minister’s office set up a special panel to address the issue, within a few hours of the protest. The panel is due to report on the issue within two weeks."

DiCaprio mentioned climate activist group, Extinction Rebellion and listed how the government is tackling the problem, adding, “Despite these promises, the air is still unsafe and activists will keep the pressure on until the air pollution reaches safe levels."

The post has already garnered over 6 lakh likes including one from actress Jennifer Aniston.

The actor has always advocated about climate change and even spoke about it during his acceptance speech when he won the Best Actor Oscar in 2016. Earlier DiCaprio had also expressed concern during the Chennai water crisis. DiCaprio also has the Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation (LDF) which raises awareness about environmental issues.

Delhi has been battling air pollution with air quality reaching a hazardous level in the past few weeks.  The AI index has had a serious health impact on many. The AQI had touched 494 on November 3, the most hazardous level since 2016.
