Joaquin Phoenix starrer ‘Joker’ continues to break records as it has now become the highest-grossing R-rated film in the US, equivalent to A-certified movie of all-time in India. The film has earned $849 million (about Rs. 6,014 crores) at the box office.

‘Joker’ toppled ‘The Matrix Reloaded’ off the first spot.

It is now also the highest-grossing film based on a DC Comics property in India. It grabbed top spot after beating previous record-holder ‘Aquaman’. However, the Jason Momoa starrer ‘Aquaman’ is still biggest DC film worldwide followed by ‘The Dark Knight Rises’, ‘The Dark Knight’, ‘Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice’, and then ‘Joker’.

As ‘Joker’ is not a DC film so barring ‘Wonder Woman’ and ‘Aquaman’, it is also the highest-grossing film based on DC comics in 33 other markets. These are in Argentina, Italy, Mexico, Netherlands, Russia, and Spain.

In Argentina, Mexico, Russia, and 11 other markets, ‘Joker’ is also Warner Bros.'s biggest movie.

In a total of $849 million, ‘Joker’ has earned nearly $278 million (about Rs. 1,966 crores) in the US and Canada, followed by the UK ($57.6 million), Mexico ($39.8 million), South Korea ($35.9 million), Japan ($32.8 million) and Brazil ($30.2 million).

According to box office analysts, Todd Philips’ directorial is said to end up with $950 million (about Rs. 6,729 crores) worldwide by the end of its theatrical run, which is all the more surprising considering the DC film never managed to release in China.

Also, the film regained the top spot at the weekend box office in its fourth week of release, narrowly surpassing `Maleficent: Mistress of Evil.
