'Gully Boy' quick review: You don't have to be a fan of hip-hop to like this film

There's so much to take away from Zoya Akhtar's latest film 'Gully Boy'. 

A story of an underdog triumphing against the odds is a story as old as time and yet 'Gully Boy' — based in the chaotic lanes of Asia's biggest slum, Mumbai's Dharavi — tells a story that is riveting, with superlative performances by not just its lead but the entire cast. 

'Gully Boy' is the story of an honest, diligent Murad who may share a cube-like home with his large family in Dharavi but who also harbours dreams of becoming the next big thing in hip-hop. Initially reluctant to speak up, he finds a mentor in MC Sher, a fellow rap artist; and the two together literally own the underground music scene in no time.

You'll find yourself rooting for almost each of the characters in the film. Co-written by Zoya Akhtar and Reema Kagti, the film has such well-etched characters that your heart goes out to each of them at some point or the other. 

Leading lady Alia Bhatt plays the feisty, over-possessive Safeena, Murad's girlfriend in the film. Bhatt always manages to shine in her roles and this time is no different. 

The film though belongs to Ranveer Singh who delivers perhaps the best performance of his career.

You don't have to be a fan of hip-hop to like this film. There's something for everyone in this film.
