Sanjay Leela Bhansali and Alia Bhatt will work together in 'Gangubai Kathiawadi’. The filmmaker had earlier roped in Alia to play the lead opposite Salman Khan in 'Inshallah' but the film had to be shelved.

On Wednesday, trade analyst Taran Adarsh announced the new film on Twitter. Adarsh wrote, "Sanjay Leela Bhansali announces his new film #GangubaiKathiawadi... Stars Alia Bhatt in title role... Also, release date finalized: 11 Sept 2020... Bhansali Productions collaborates with Jayantilal Gada's PEN India Ltd for this film."

Based on a true story, Alia will be seen essaying the role of Gangubai Kathiawadi who was known as one of the top madams of Mumbai’s red-light district Kamathipura.

According to writer Hussain Zaidi's book 'Mafia Queens of Mumbai', Gangubai had been sold into prostitution by her boyfriend and she eventually turned one of its biggest supporters. She though harboured a soft corner for young women forced into the trade.
Bhatt will play the lead role and the male actor has not been finalised so far.

Alia has had two releases this year. While Zoya Akhtar's 'Gully Boy' earned her praises, Abhishek Varman's 'Kalank' did not do well at the box office.

The actress has 'Brahmastra' lined up for release in the beginning of 2020. The film has been directed by Ayan Mukerji and co-stars Ranbir Kapoor and Amitabh Bachchan along with Bhatt.
