Story highlights

'Once Upon a Time in Hollywood' picked up five nominations, while 'Joker' and 'Parasite' earned four each.

Soon after ‘The Irishman’ featured prominently at the Golden Globe Awards 2020 nominations list, the Netflix film also swept the annual Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts (AACTA) Awards nominations with six mentions across seven categories.

Three other films followed ‘The Irishman’ as ‘Once Upon a Time in Hollywood’ picked up five nominations and ‘Joker’ and ‘Parasite’ got four nods each.

The annually held awards ceremony will have the Australian film academy honour the best movies of the year from around the world. “The AACTA International Awards honor film excellence on a global scale, acknowledging international excellence within the screen industry,” AACTA CEO Damian Trewhella said in a statement. “As always, we are thrilled to see many of our talented Australian practitioners and performers nominated for AACTA International Awards this year.”

Another film that made news was ‘The King’ that although missed a mention in the best director category but earned its place in the best film category. It was the only film that landed in best film category but did not get a mention for its filmmaker in the best director category.

The best director contenders are thus Sam Mendes for ‘1917’, Martin Scorsese for ‘The Irishman’, Todd Philips for ‘Joker’, Quentin Tarantino for ‘Once Upon a Time in Hollywood’ and Bong Joon Ho for ‘Parasite’.

Worth noting is also actress Margot Robbie who grabbed a double nominee in the best supporting actress category for her roles in ‘Bombshell’ and ‘Once Upon a Time in Hollywood’. She is pitted opposite Nicole Kidman, who is also nominated for ‘Bombshell’, Toni Collette for ‘Knives Out’, and Florence Pugh for ‘Little Women’.

Toni Collette, Nicole Kidman and Margot Robbie got the same nominations in Golden Globes 2020 list that was announced on Monday.

The ninth annual AACTA International Awards will be handed out at a ceremony in Los Angeles on January 3, 2020.
