Uber slashes fares by 30 per cent in Lahore

Cab-hailing app Uber has slashed its fares by up to 30 per cent to mark their six-month anniversary in Lahore, Pakistan.

While the base fare and minimum fare remain as before, the company will now charge Rs 6.84 (Pakistan Rupee) per kilometre, down from Rs 13.7 earlier. Even the waiting-per-minute fare has a seen a slight reduction in fares, Pakistan's English-language daily Dawn reported. 

The company expects the revised rates to "boost demand" in the city. 

"Uber will not only be more affordable for riders but driver-partners should also earn more through increased demand," said the company in a press release. 

There are over 1,000 taxis working for Uber. However, the world's largest taxi-dispatching company didn't outline their strategy as to how they will manage the increased workload.

There have been complaints of not enough Uber cabs in the city. The company started out with 100 cabs but has failed to augment its fleet in commensurate with growing demand in the city. 

They have faced difficulties in hiring drivers as many drivers walk in for the job with bogus driving licence.
